.

Somali Interior Minister Abdishakur Sheikh Hassan was killed Friday in a suicide attack at his home, apparently carried out by a woman, senior security officials told AFP.

“The minister died in hospital,” Adan Mohammed said. “The information we have so far indicates that a young woman, the minister's niece, carried out the attack.”

The statement was confirmed by other security sources, who said the woman had stayed at the minister's Mogadishu home for the last three days.

“The minister passed away and was killed in a terrorist attack,” Information Minister Adulkarim Jama told Radio Mogadishu.

A number of other people were also wounded in the explosion which happened as the minister hosted a meeting with other colleagues, said a second official, Ibrahim Siyad.

The suicide attack was the third in Mogadishu in less than two weeks, all claimed by Somalia’s Islamist Shabaab rebels, who are engaged in a protracted battle with the country’s weak, western-backed government for control of the Horn of Africa nation.

“The leader of the Shabaab declared on the Islamic radio station Al Furqan that they were the perpetrators of the attack that killed the interior minister,” the station announced.

The Shabaab are currently facing an unprecedented offensive launched the by the transitional government and backed by the African Union peacekeeping mission in Mogadishu (AMISOM).

Soldier were immediately deployed to reinforce the areas of Mogadishu currently under government control in case of further attacks, residents said.

On Thursday, one civilian was killed at the port of Mogadishu by blasts set off by two suicide bombers.

On May 30, two Ugandan soldiers attached to AMISOM were killed on their base in the south of the city in an attack carried out by at least three people.

The Shabaab have suffered serious military setbacks during the massive offensive launched in February by the government and backed by AMISOM.

Struggling to retake their lost positions through conventional warfare, the Shabaab decided to boost their suicide attacks, according to security sources.

Shabaab operatives and several Al Qaeda-linked foreigners fighting in Somalia, have vowed in public statements that they will “soon avenge the death of (their) leader Osama Bin Laden,” killed in Pakistan on May 2 by US special forces.

The Shabaab swore allegiance to Al Qaeda in 2002. ------------------------

SOMALIA - FAILED STATE

Somali Interior Minister Abdi Shakur Sheikh Hassan has been killed in a suicide attack at his home in the capital Mogadishu, officials say.

The bomber appeared to be a woman, an official told the BBC.

Militants who control much of Somalia have carried out suicide attacks in recent years.

Meanwhile, two people are said to have been killed in Mogadishu during protests against a deal to extend the terms of the president and parliament.

Under the deal signed in Uganda on Thursday, their mandates have been extended until June 2012. Elections had been due this year.

The prime minister is to be sacked and a new one appointed within 30 days.

Friday saw a second day of demonstrations against the deal, and in support of Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.

Witnesses said troops fired on protesters who had gathered outside the hotel where MPs have been meeting, killing two.

No groups has claimed the bombing in which Sheikh Hassan died. It was the third suicide attack in Mogadishu in less than two weeks.

Pro-government forces have been gaining ground in the capital.

African Union troops have seized territory from al-Shabab, the al-Qaeda linked group.

However, al-Shabab still controls much of southern and central areas of the country.

Somalia has been racked by constant war for more than 20 years. Its last functioning national government was toppled in 1991. -------------------------------------------------------------

Suicide Blast Kills 8 in Somali Capital

VoA News: Police in Somalia say a suicide car bomber has struck near a police station in the capital, Mogadishu, killing at least eight people.

Authorities said the car exploded Monday after speeding toward the station. Somalia's Interior Ministry said the dead include two children, and that 35 people were wounded in the blast.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.  Mogadishu endures almost daily battles between Islamist insurgents and government forces, who are backed by African Union peacekeepers.  Thousands of people have been killed or wounded in fighting over the last few years.

Somalia has experienced 20 years of war and chaos since the overthrow of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.
